Sense wins cost consultancy role with the Docklands Light Railway

Sense has been appointed to provide cost consultancy services for the delivery of a three car enhancement programme for client Docklands Light Railway (DLR).

The London City Airport extension runs from Canning Town to King George V station at North Woolwich via London City Airport and will play an important part in London 2012 Olympics.

The line has four new stations which now connect local and airport passengers to the tube system at Canning Town, as well as providing a direct line to Canary Wharf and central London.

The next stage of the DLR expansion will be the 2.5km extension from King George V under the Thames to Woolwich Arsenal, which will play host to the proposed venue for the 2012 shooting events.

Works to enable DLR to operate three-carriage trains has commenced and, despite minor design and construction issues, main design and build contractor Taylor Woodrow, look set to complete the project on time.

Many of the stations along the DLR route already have platforms long enough to accommodate three-carriage trains and require no major platform upgrade works, however some will require platform extensions.

DLR has also refurbished its fleet, including a redesigned interior to allow more people to travel on each train and improved passenger information displays. DLR has ordered 55 new rails cars (25 of these are being paid for by the Olympic Delivery Authority) and following testing, they should be operational by 2009. The construction phase of the entire project will be completed by 2010.
